Grinling Gibbons :  It’s not the subject matter, more the fact that he carved it in wood, that makes my jaw drop. It’s a form of expression that seems almost to conquer the nature of Nature, like the sculptures of Canova or Bernini.  I know virtually nothing about wood-carving….sharpening a pencil is as close as I’ve got….but this stuff is clearly magnificent, and warmer and earthier, more organic, maybe more human than marble. Google him today …..there’s stuff out there, but I couldn’t decide which to
choose. >
